| A product of the Sir Bobby Charlton soccer school, David Beckham burst onto the United scene in December 1994 when the Red Devils went out of Europe, but not before they had exacted revenge on the Turkish side Galatasaray, thumping them 4-0, with one of the goals coming from Beckham. A former England under-21 international, Beckham came to Old Trafford as an associated schoolboy in June 1989 and turned pro in Jan 1993, four months after making his debut as sub in League Cup at Brighton. He had loan spell at Preston in the 1994-95 season but really captured the imagination of the United fans when scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory over champions Blackburn at the start of the 1995-96 season. Leytonstone born Beckham was drawn to United by his father Ted's love of the club, United beating off the attentions of many London clubs before signing him. David played a major role in United's double season, scoring crucial goals in the Premiership, and the winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea. David was selected in Glenn Hoddle's first England squad, and made his international debut against Moldova. His main ambition now surely must be to captain Manchester United and England at some point in the future, a step in keeping with his meteoric rise in English football, and a feat that is definitely not beyond him. |
