The 3rd Round of the Capital One Cup was off to a flying start yesterday with some big names already being scalped.
Aston Villa started things off with a pulsating match at the Eastlands where they welcomed Manchester City. Mancini used the opportunity to tinker with his side making 11 changes from the side which went to the Emirates on Sunday. His tinkering did not pay off as Aston Villa beat the Premier League champions 4-2.
Mario Ballotelli gave City the lead in the 27th minute, but an own goal from Gareth Barry brought Villa back on level terms. City then regained the lead in the 64th minute through a Aleksandar Kolarov free kick but the champions were not able to hold their lead for more than 6 minutes before Agbonlahor brought things level again. The game went into extra time and Agbonlahor proved the bane of City as his deflected shot got turned in by N’Zobia before he finally put the match firmly beyond City with the fourth goal 7 minutes from time.
The biggest scalp of the day came from Leeds United who beat Everton 2-1 at Elland Road. Aidan White got the first goal for Leeds United after capitalising on sloppy defending from Everton to curl a superb strike past substitute goalkeeper Jan Mucha. They doubled their advantage in the second half when Rodolph Austin deflected a Pugh shot past the goalkeeper for Leeds second of the night.
Sylvain Distin pulled one back for Everton in the 81st minute, setting up a nervy finish for the rest of the match, but Leeds held on for a well-deserved victory. Neil Warnock said

I think that’s as good a performance as I’ve ever had in the cup, because of the circumstances. It was like going back in time, with the weather chucking it down, the fans singing, the officials were great, everything was.

Elsewhere, John Terry put the troubles of an FA disciplinary hearing and a retirement from international football behind him to skipper his side to a 6-0 thrashing of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Goals from Garry Cahill, Ryan Betrand, Juan Mata, Oriol Romeu, Fernando Torres and first goal for Victor Moses on his first full debut, sent Chelsea cruising to the next round of the Capital One Cup.
Swansea managed to break their two match losing streak coming back from 2-1 down to beat Crawley 3-2 with a 90 minute winner. Michu was back to scoring ways, putting Swansea ahead in the 27th minute but Crawley quickly equalised and then went ahead with goals from Josh Simpson and Hope Akpan. Goals from Danny Graham and Monk spared Laudrup’s blushes and sent Swansea to the next round.
Wigan came from behind to win 4-1 at West Ham, Southampton cruised to victory with a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland ended MK Dons good run of form against premier league opposition in the 3rd round of the Football League Cup.
All the results from yesterday’s matches can be seen below

The two premier league clubs Fulham and Stoke both suffered shock defeats in the Capital One Cup ties played on Tuesday the 28th of August. Fulham suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday while Stoke lost by 4 goals to 3 in a pulsating match against Swindon Town FC.

Swindon, the league one side pulled a massive upset against Stoke in a 7 goal thriller at the Britannia Stadium with James Collins scoring a hat-trick. The Robins were off to a flying start with James Collins capitalising on a goal keeping error by Stoke’s goal keeper in the 27th minute to put Swindon in front before adding another in the 40th minute. Stoke fought back in the second half of the match, with Jones and Walter levelling up the scores to take the game into extra time. Aden Flint then put Swindon ahead right on the stroke of extra time half-time. In the second half of extra time, the momentum swung Stoke’s way with Peter Crouch heading home an equaliser with only 10 minutes left to play. It looked certain that the game was going to go to penalties when Thomas Sorensen spilled Millers shot to Andy Williams who nodded the ball over to Collins for his third goal of the night, ensuring the Robins will have a place in the Capital One cup third round.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday stretched their unbeaten run to 17 matches by scoring the only goal at Hillsborough. Wednesday got awarded a penalty after Stephen Kelly fouled Chris Maguire inside the box, with Gary Madine keeping his calm to slot the resulting spot kick past Schwarzer. Hangeland equalised on the hour mark only to find his goal ruled out by the assistant refree’s flag. After the match, Fulham’s manager Martin Jol admitted that Sheffield Wednesday deserved their win on the night.

The scores elsewhere are

Swansea 3 – 1 Barnsley
Aston Villa 3 – 0 Tranmere
Wigan 4 – 1 Nottingham Forest

The Football League Cup, now known as the ‘Capital One Cup’ should be the priority for Liverpoool this season according to onlinebettingoffers.com. Brendan Rodgers faces a tough task at Anfield Road changing the playing style, and whilst fans have patience, there is still a expectancy of European football to be achieved in some capacity.

Most Liverpool fans will have certainly resigned to not contending for the Premier League this season, and many more would be realistic and not regard their club in the top four anymore. The aim must be Europe; and even then to attain a UEFA slot in the Premier League will be a tricky achievement for Liverpool, as they face competition from clubs such as Newcastle and Tottenham. Winning either the FA Cup, or the Football League Cup as they did last season seems the most logical way to
be in Europe next year.

The obvious priority some may argue would be the FA Cup. It’s a more prestigious trophy, being open to more clubs, however comes with it is more competition. Clubs frequently put out their best sides, and fixtures with non-league teams make for difficult encounters. As a result of winning the Football League Cup last year, Liverpool enter the League Cup straight into the third round. Further to this, the club have a great track record and are historically the most successful team , having won the competition a record eight times.

The current Liverpool side lacks depth, and it’s only likely that Brendan Rodgers will have to rotate his side. For this season though, to buy time, he may need to put more eggs in the Football League basket than other managers may do. He needs time, but he also needs to meet the expectations of the Liverpool fans this season.

Specifically the 11th of August 2012 at 3pm.

This match represents a replay of MK Dons first round clash last year, where they travelled to Cheltenham and delivered a 4-1 trouncing to The Robins with Luke Summerfield, Jabo Ibehre, Dean Lewington and Angelo Balanta all finding the net for the Dons. Sam Baldock scored for Cheltenham when the game was still 1-0, but the Robins were quickly outclassed by a rampant Dons side.

MK Dons will be looking to repeat the same performance against Cheltenham Town FC while the Robins will be hoping for retribution.

The football league cup has a new sponsorship deal with Capital One, a credit card company, which is set to run from 2012 to 2016. This follows the expiration of the sponsorship deal the Football League Cup had with Carling which lasted from 2003 to 2012, making Carling the longest sponsor since the inception of the Football League Cup in 1960. Because the Cup is usually named after the sponsor, the new sponsorship deal means that the Football League Cup will now be known as the Capital One Cup.

While the Football League’s chief commercial officer, Richard Heaselgrave hailed the new sponsorship deal as being terrific news, football fans all over the UK have had a completely different reaction to the news, with a number of fans going to the social media sites to express their disgust. Here are some examples of the tweets by fans

looool Carling Cup is now called the Capital One Cup, that sounds so stupid do they wanna downgrade it any more?

Oh that’s right:it’s called the “Capital One Cup” this season. We are more owned by credit than beer so makes sense. #DAFT

Public opinion is that many of the big clubs already do not take the Cup seriously, mainly due to the fact they use the Football League Cup as an opportunity to blood their younger, fringe players instead of playing established first team players and the new name for the tournament will not do anything to help the image of the competition.

So what do you think? Do you think this whole furor is just much ado over nothing, or do you agree and think that the new name for the League Cup is just plain ridiculous?
