Tournament Structure

The League Cup is entered by all teams in the Football League and the Premier League. The first round marks the start of the competition and all teams from the Championship or lower take part in a single leg game (unless they are in the Europa League) to determine who progresses. Premier League teams enter in the second round unless they have European commitments, while those already in Europe make their entrance in the third round.

Winners of each match are placed into the draw for the next round, where they are drawn randomly to face their next opponent. This means that there are often opportunities for giant-killing exploits when lowly teams are drawn against larger clubs. Until the semi-finals all games are just one leg, but the semi-final is played over two – one leg at each home ground of the teams competing. The final is played on neutral territory – usually Wembley – and reverts back to one leg. It must be noted that no matches throughout the competition go to replays. If necessary, they are decided on the day by extra time and a penalty shootout.
